Promoting Renewable Energy

Brookfield Power generates electricity primarily through hydroelectric power facilities, or water power, which is acknowledged as the leading option for environmentally-responsible energy production. Waterpower is green, clean and renewable!

In addition to supporting renewable energy though our own operations, we have worked with industry participants and governments to build an investment and regulatory climate that supports the development of sustainable renewable energy projects. Brookfield Power has played a lead role in the Ontario Waterpower and Windpower Task Forces. As well, Brookfield Power and many of our affiliates are active members of the Ontario Waterpower Association, the Canadian Hydropower Association and the Canadian Wind Energy Association.

Sustainable Development Initiative

Brookfield Power takes responsibility for managing natural resources in ways that ensure sustainable development through an approach that protects and enhances the ecosystems and communities in which we operate. That is why we developed an Environmental Policy, which will guide the company as we move forward.

In 2004, as part of the company’s Environmental Policy implementation, we established a Sustainable Development Projects Recognition Initiative, which is an internal tool to provide operating units with additional financial resources to support local multi-stakeholder projects that are above and beyond mandatory or regulatory requirements.

Environmental Policy

Ecologo Certification and The Environmental Choice Program

The Environmental Choice Program is a comprehensive national program sponsored by Environment Canada, which certifies manufacturers and suppliers that produce products and services less harmful to the environment with the Ecologo Registered trademark. Brookfield Power has 19 hydroelectric facilities in Ontario, Quebec and Louisiana that meet the strict standards of the Environmental Choice Program. Click here for more information.

ISO Accreditation

ISO 14000 is a series of international standards on environmental management, which provides companies with a framework for the development of both their environmental systems and the supporting audit programs. Recognized world wide as the standard for excellence in environmental management, Brookfield Power’s Lièvre River Operations in western Quebec is certified ISO 14001. This signifies that we have achieved a standardized set of environmental management tools to comply with laws and minimize the impact of our operations on the environment..
